Although perioperative mortality is a key consideration in decisions to perform elective abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair, most published data on outcomes are not stratified by both age and sex. In this study, researchers used a national database to determine age- and sex-specific mortality for 3457 patients (86% men; average age, 72) who underwent AAA repair in the Netherlands in 1997 or 2000. Nearly all procedures were open repairs.
In men, 1-month mortality was in the 4% to 5% range for those who were 55 to 69, then rose to 7%, 11%, and 20% for ages 70–74, 75–79, and 80–84, respectively.
