The correlation between dyspepsia symptoms and endoscopic findings varies from study to study. For this community-based trial, researchers recruited 1033 people (mean age, 58) from two small Italian towns. Participants completed gastrointestinal-symptom questionnaires, and everyone — whether symptomatic or not — underwent endoscopy and breath-testing for Helicobacter pylori infection.
Based on questionnaire results, 53% of participants were asymptomatic, 28% reported marked dyspepsia (with or without coexisting reflux symptoms), 11% reported reflux symptoms only, and 8% had alarm symptoms or signs (e.g., dysphagia, recurrent vomiting, weight loss, melena).
