Rib fractures are the most common nonspine fractures that occur in elders. Evidence suggests that history of rib fracture predicts future fractures, including hip fractures, in women. In the prospective Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study, investigators sought to determine the epidemiology and prognostic characteristics of rib fractures in nearly 6000 older men (age, ≥65).
During a mean follow-up of 6.2 years, rib fractures were the most common nonspine fractures that occurred (24% of 522 nonspine fractures). About half of rib fractures occurred after falls from standing height or lower.
