Randomized trial evidence for statin use in elders is limited. Investigators examined the efficacy and safety of rosuvastatin in a subgroup of older people in the JUPITER trial, a randomized placebo-controlled multisite industry-sponsored study. Participants had no known diabetes or cardiovascular disease, had LDL cholesterol levels <130 mg/dL, and had C-reactive protein levels ≥2.0 mg/L.
Among 5695 participants aged ≥70, the rate of occurrence of a major cardiovascular event was significantly lower in the rosuvastatin group than in the placebo group (1.22 vs. 1.99 events per 100 person-years).
