Most of the 5 million dementia patients in the U.S. live at home and receive care from family members, who face heightened stress as the disease progresses. In a randomized trial, researchers in Pennsylvania tested a nonpharmacological intervention designed to preserve functional status in such patients and ease caregiver stress. Of 209 patient–caregiver dyads (mean Mini-Mental State Examination score, 13.4 for patients) included in the analysis, 102 received a structured home-based intervention for 4 months that consisted of up to 12 sessions with occupational therapists and advance practice nurses who provided functional and environmental assessments, caregiver education and support, and training in problem solving.
