Because new malignancies are the most common cause of late mortality among survivors of childhood cancer, adherence to cancer screening guidelines is important for early detection and treatment. To evaluate adherence, researchers used patient-reported data from a 26-center study of long-term survivors of childhood cancer. More than 8000 patients whose cancer was diagnosed between 1970 and 1986 were included (mean age at diagnosis, 8 years). Two groups were examined: (1) women at average risk for breast or cervical cancer, and (2) men or women at high risk for breast, colorectal, or skin cancer (i.e., those who received high-dose radiation therapy during childhood).
