In the CLOTS Trial 1, patients who were hospitalized for acute stroke were randomized to usual care plus thigh-high compression stockings or usual care with no stockings; no significant benefit was found with use of stockings. In the CLOTS Trial 2, more than 3000 immobile patients were randomized to usual care plus thigh-high compression stockings or usual care plus below-knee compression stockings during hospitalization for acute stroke. Duplex ultrasonography was performed at specified intervals, and the primary outcome was symptomatic or asymptomatic deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in popliteal or femoral veins.
