Counseling to promote healthy lifestyles in patients with diabetes can improve control, but effective programs have not been standardized. Two randomized U.S. studies addressed the value of focused, fairly intensive, individual interventions versus group interventions or usual education to improve glycemic control in patients with diabetes.
In one study, 222 adults (half with type 1 and half with type 2 diabetes; mean baseline glycosylated hemoglobin [HbA1c] level, 9%) received one of three treatments: five 2-hour sessions of individually structured cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), five sessions of group-based traditional education, or usual individual appointments with nurses and dietitians as needed.
