Behavioral techniques aren't recommended often for men with symptoms of overactive bladder. In this trial, U.S. researchers randomized 143 men with overactive bladder symptoms to either anticholinergic drug therapy (extended-release oxybutynin; dose titrated to balance effectiveness and adverse effects) or a behavioral intervention consisting of techniques to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, delay voiding, and suppress urge. Patients with bladder outlet obstruction and those whose symptoms responded to α-blocker therapy during a run-in phase were excluded. The behavioral techniques were taught by nurse practitioners.
After 8 weeks of treatment, the mean frequency of voiding decreased similarly in both groups — from about 11 to 9 voids daily.…
