Various screening tests for early dementia have been proposed for primary care practice, but many are influenced by the patient's language skills and education. The Visual Association Test (VAT) theoretically avoids these pitfalls by assessing “cued recall” of pictorial stimuli. First, the person is shown six cue cards that depict familiar objects (e.g., ape, balloon, baby carriage). Next, the person is shown six “association cards” that show new interactions involving the previously depicted objects (e.g., the ape is holding an umbrella; a key is hanging from the balloon).
