In response to a meal, the intestine secretes glucagon-like peptide-1, which enhances insulin secretion, inhibits glucagon secretion, and suppresses appetite; evidence suggests that treatment with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists results in weight loss in patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
