The public relies on media reports for information on medical research discoveries. With that in mind, some medical journals issue press releases about their research articles. In this study, investigators assessed whether the quality of these press releases influences the quality of associated newspaper stories.
Researchers reviewed consecutive issues of five journals (Annals of Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Journal of the American Medical Association, and the New England Journal of Medicine) to identify the first 100 research articles that generated newspaper stories.
