Compromised kidney function is associated with excess risk for cardiovascular (CV) disease. However, whether living kidney donors experience increased CV risk is unclear. In this retrospective, population-based, matched cohort study, Canadian investigators sought to determine whether living kidney donors had higher risk for CV disease than did non-donors.
More than 2000 living kidney donors in Ontario (60% women; median age at donation, 43) were matched with more than 20,000 non-donors from the healthiest segment of the population.
