Resurfacing hip arthroplasty (in which the femoral head is resurfaced with a cap and the neck is preserved) is an increasingly popular alternative to total hip arthroplasty (in which the femoral head and neck are replaced). Resurfacing may be especially attractive for young patients because it results in more hip movement than total hip arthroplasty and may make revision surgery easier later in the patient's life. In this single-center, assessor-blinded, trial, U.K. investigators randomized 126 adults with severe hip arthritis to total hip arthroplasty or to resurfacing hip arthroplasty.
