A prior study showed that, among older men, impaired cognitive performance on the Trail Making Test B (TMT-B) is an independent predictor of subsequent first-ever stroke (Neurology 2010; 74:379). Now, the same Swedish investigators report the associations between prestroke cognitive testing and mortality after first-ever stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
More than 900 men (age, 70) completed the Trail Making Test A (TMT-A), TMT-B, and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Overall, 155 experienced first-ever stroke or TIA during median follow-up of 11 years. Of these men, 84 died during additional median follow-up of 2.5 years.
