Approximately 5% to 15% of childhood cancer survivors develop a subsequent malignant neoplasm; such neoplasms are the second leading cause of premature death in this population, after recurrence of primary neoplasms. To characterize the risk for subsequent gastrointestinal malignant neoplasms among childhood cancer survivors, researchers studied data from 26 centers in North America for a cohort of children (age, <21) who received cancer diagnoses between 1970 and 1986 and were followed through 2005.
