Limited evidence suggests that kidney stones are associated with developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). Investigators evaluated this relation in a cohort study of 3 million Canadian adults without end-stage renal disease (ESRD) at baseline.
During a median follow-up of 11 years, 0.8% of patients developed at least one kidney stone, 0.2% developed ESRD, and 4% developed stage 3b-5 CKD (glomerular filtration rate [GFR] <45 mL/minute/1.73 m2). Having one or more kidney stone episodes was associated with significantly higher risks for ESRD (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.2) and new stage 3b-5 chronic kidney disease (AHR, 1.7) compared with having no stone episodes.
