Generic drugs must be bioequivalent to original brand-name drugs, but they are not required to be the same shapes or colors. Researchers used a U.S. pharmacy database to assess the effect of the physical appearance of generic drugs on adherence, specifically with antiepileptic drugs (most of which were prescribed for seizure disorder, mood disorder, or chronic pain). They identified 11,500 patients who filled new prescriptions for antiepileptic drugs plus at least two refills and who became nonadherent (defined as not refilling a prescription within 5 days of the date the previous prescription would elapse).
