Some patients with aspirin-related bleeding peptic ulcers are infected with Helicobacter pylori; others are not. To determine whether H. pylori infection influences the natural history of aspirin-associated ulcer bleeding, Hong Kong researchers conducted a prospective nonrandomized study of three groups of low-dose aspirin users (average follow-up in each group, >4 years).
249 H. pylori–infected patients with bleeding ulcers underwent successful eradication and continued taking aspirin. Their incidence of recurrent bleeding ulcers was about 1 case per 100 patient-years, regardless of whether antiulcer drugs were used during follow-up.
