Allergic rhinitis affects as many as 30% of children and adults. In this multicenter, randomized trial from Germany, researchers evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture for treating 422 patients with allergic rhinitis and IgE sensitization to birch and grass pollen. Participants were assigned randomly to 12 acupuncture treatments, 12 sham acupuncture treatments, or no acupuncture during 8 weeks.
At 8 weeks, acupuncture, compared with sham acupuncture or no acupuncture, was associated with a statistically significant improvement (P<0.001) in the primary outcome measure, mean change from baseline in the 6-point Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) score.
