The Intergroup Exemestane Study (IES) is an international, industry-sponsored, randomized trial in which 4740 postmenopausal patients with estrogen-receptor (ER)-positive or ER-unknown breast cancers, who were disease-free after 2 to 3 years of adjuvant tamoxifen therapy, continued to receive tamoxifen for 5 years or were switched to exemestane for the remainder of the 5-year adjuvant therapy cycle. First results of this trial were published in 2004. At that time, 90% of the patients had completed their allocated therapy (median follow-up, 30.6 months); 449 breast cancer–related events and 199 deaths had occurred.
