Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. In the French MOSAIC trial, researchers showed that postoperative chemotherapy with FOLFOX (12 cycles of continuous-infusion 5-fluorouracil [FU] plus 12 doses of oxaliplatin during 6 months) for node-positive stage III disease lowers risk for recurrence and improves the 3-year rate of overall survival by nearly 50%, compared with surgery alone (N Engl J Med 2004; 350:2343). However, treatment for stage II, node-negative patients remains controversial, with a smaller relative benefit for adjuvant therapy generally.
