We have no effective screening tools for ovarian cancer, in contrast to many other cancers. Thus, ovarian cancer usually is diagnosed after it has already progressed to stage III or IV. Despite aggressive measures, such as cytoreductive surgery and intravenous platinum-based chemotherapy, survival at 5 years among women with ovarian cancer is dismal. In the absence of a dedicated assay to quantify the incidence and rate of distant metastases, identification of factors that predict poor prognosis is of paramount importance.
