Placement of a vena cava filter usually is indicated in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) who either have contraindications to anticoagulant therapy or have had emboli despite receiving anticoagulants. However, clinicians sometimes consider placing filters in patients with extensive or recurrent thromboses, even when such patients are not intolerant of anticoagulants. These patients often have strong VTE risk factors, such as cancer, advanced age, or immobility. Does placing filters, in addition to administering anticoagulants, improve outcomes?
