On behalf of colleagues in the Austrian Breast Cancer Study Group (ABCSG), Michael Gnant presented results showing that intravenous bisphosphonate therapy could lower risk for recurrence in patients with early-stage (stage 1 or 2) breast cancer. In ABCSG Trial 12 (J Clin Oncol 2008; 26:suppl:abstract LBA4), 1803 premenopausal women with hormone-responsive (ER-positive or PR-positive) early-stage breast cancer were randomized to receive tamoxifen or anastrozole, each with or without zoledronic acid (ZA, Zometa; administered every 6 months) for 3 years.
