Family history has recently been recognized as a risk factor for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). To examine this association further, investigators evaluated records of 9717 CLL patients in a Swedish Cancer Registry plus 4 population-based controls with no histories of cancer (identified from a multigenerational registry) for each patient, matched for sex, year of birth, and county of residence. Records of first-degree relatives of patients and controls were assessed for diagnoses of CLL, B-cell or T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), multiple myeloma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and hairy cell leukemia.
