The “7+3” induction regimen of cytarabine plus an anthracycline, followed by consolidation chemotherapy, has been the therapeutic backbone for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for more than 20 years (JW Oncol Hematol Oct 20 2009). Although most patients achieve remissions, many still succumb to the disease or to treatment complications. To find a better treatment approach, investigators evaluated a variety of different agents and regimens in a large, multinational phase III trial conducted from 1994 to 2002 that involved patients (age, <60) with newly diagnosed AML.
A total of 1658 patients (including children) were randomized to one of the following two induction regimens:
