In the U.S., postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy plus radiotherapy is the standard of care for gastric cancer patients because of improved survival over that attained with surgery alone (N Engl J Med 2001; 345:725). European trials have shown survival advantages with both pre- and postoperative chemotherapy without radiation (JW Oncol Hematol Oct 16 2006).
To assess better whether adjuvant chemotherapy lengthens survival, investigators conducted a meta-analysis of 17 trials involving 3838 patients with gastric cancer who received surgery with or without postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy.
