Treatments for recurrent malignant gliomas (MGs) are not very effective in improving patient outcomes. Most patients die within 6 months after relapse. Chemotherapy-based treatments for MGs are the most commonly studied. Now, researchers have retrospectively assessed the toxicity and efficacy of short-course, hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (H-SRT) in 147 patients with recurrent high-grade gliomas.
Of this cohort, 60% had undergone surgical resection before salvage H-SRT, and 33% received chemotherapy at recurrence concurrent with H-SRT. All patients received initial fractionated radiation therapy before H-SRT. Median tumor volume at recurrence was 22 mL; the median dose of H-SRT was 35 Gy (in daily fractions of 3.5 Gy).
