Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of a number of infectious agents that has been clearly associated with risk for developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). However, evidence of a link between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and NHL is less well established.
To examine this potential association, investigators assessed incidence of NHL and other cancers in 603,585 participants in South Korea who were enrolled in the Korean Cancer Prevention Study during 1992 through 1995. Of this cohort, 53,045 (9%; median age, 39) tested positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg); the rest tested negative.
