Subarachnoid bleeding is typically provoked by surgery or trauma, but hemorrhage might also occur from lesions such as intracranial aneurysms. Antiplatelet drugs — used widely to prevent blood clots in patients with coronary disease — are known to increase risks for hemorrhage complications, particularly gastrointestinal bleeding. Are these agents also associated with excess risk for subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)?
To find out, investigators conducted a case-control study involving 1186 Danish patients (median age, 57; 64.6% women) admitted to neurosurgery or neurology departments with a first diagnosis of nontraumatic SAH between 1997 and 2008.
