Thalidomide-based regimens are standard treatment options for patients with multiple myeloma (MM), but they have been associated with thromboembolic complications in >20% of patients (Cancer Treat Rev 2008; 34:442).
To assess the efficacy and safety of thromboprophylaxis during MM therapy, industry-supported investigators randomized 667 patients with treatment-naive MM who were enrolled in either of two multicenter, phase III trials of thalidomide-containing regimens. All patients received aspirin (100 mg/day orally), warfarin (1.25 mg/day orally) or low molecular weight heparin (enoxaparin, 40 mg/day subcutaneously).
