Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been a treatment modality for more than 40 years. To study the late effects of this therapy, researchers conducted two separate studies of patients apparently cured of their original disease.
In the first study, Armenian et al. compared risk for chronic health problems and adverse health conditions among three groups: 145 cancer survivors treated with HSCT, 7207 cancer survivors treated with conventional chemotherapy, and 4020 siblings of cancer survivors (controls).
