Fatigue is a symptom of iron-deficiency anemia. But the association between fatigue and iron deficiency in the absence of anemia is unclear, as is the effectiveness of iron in ameliorating fatigue. Now, Swiss investigators have conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to determine the efficacy of administering intravenous (IV) iron to nonanemic patients with fatigue and low serum ferritin levels (≤50 ng/mL).
A total of 90 postmenopausal women meeting these criteria received either four 200-mg infusions of iron sucrose or placebo during a 2-week period.
