Radiation therapy for head and neck cancer and radioactive iodine for thyroid cancer have been linked to hypothyroidism. Also, whereas standard cytotoxic agents usually do not affect thyroid function, a number of targeted agents have been associated with thyroid gland dysfunction, and therapies that modulate immunologic function have been hypothesized to result in thyroid disease. Now, investigators have conducted a thorough literature review and have assessed the frequency of thyroid dysfunction associated with various agents. Their findings and recommendations are summarized as follows:
