Thrombocytosis is often observed in patients at the time of diagnosis of solid tumors. To better understand the mechanisms underlying elevated platelet production as well as the effects of thrombocytosis on tumor growth and clinical outcomes in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer, investigators conducted parallel clinical and laboratory analyses of 619 women with newly diagnosed disease. More than 90% of patients had high-grade serous or other epithelioid histology and stage 3–4 disease; 192 patients (31%) had a platelet count above normal (median, 542,000/mm3) and 427 (69%) had a platelet count within the normal range (median, 318,000/mm3).
