Children become thrombocytopenic when they are treated for malignancies or undergo hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT). When platelet counts fall below 10,000/µL, prophylactic platelet transfusions are indicated. In a prior study of platelet dosing for prophylactic platelet transfusions (the PLADO trial; JW Oncol Hematol Feb 17 2010), investigators randomized 1272 thrombocytopenic patients (including 200 children) who were undergoing HSCT or chemotherapy to receive 110 billion, 220 billion, or 440 billion platelets per square meter of body surface area.
