Adjuvant chemotherapy with a fluorinated pyrimidine combined with oxaliplatin is standard treatment for stage III colon cancer. The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)–targeted agent bevacizumab combined with first-and second-line chemotherapy improves disease-free survival and, in some studies, overall survival in patients with advanced disease. However, in the recent National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project C-08 trial (J Clin Oncol 2011; 29:11), the addition of bevacizumab to adjuvant chemotherapy in stage II and III colon cancer failed to improved outcomes.
