Accurate staging of newly diagnosed Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is critical for optimizing curative therapy while minimizing early- and late-treatment–related toxicities. To assess the role of unilateral bone-marrow biopsy in HL staging, Danish investigators retrospectively analyzed patients (age, ≥15 years) with newly diagnosed HL who had undergone pretherapy staging with both bone-marrow biopsy and [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging.
Of 454 patients, 27 (6%) had a positive marrow biopsy and 106 (23%) had bone lesions identified on PET/CT. Of the 27 marrow-positive patients, 23 (85%) also had one or more PET-identified bone lesions, 5 (19%) were upstaged from having stage III to stage IV dise…
