Pyomyositis (PM) is a bacterial infection of skeletal muscle that usually results in abscess formation. Bacterial myositis (BM) is a more diffuse infection that affects one or more muscle groups without clear abscess formation. PM is primarily caused by Staphylococcus aureus, and BM is primarily caused by Streptococcus pyogenes or S. aureus. Although cases of PM usually have been reported in tropical locations, investigators in Houston noted an increase in both types of muscular infections since 2000. This report focuses on 45 previously healthy children (mean age, 5.5 years) with primary muscle infections.
