Young children who attend childcare facilities have a higher risk for acute respiratory infections (ARIs) than children cared for in their homes, but how do age, time since childcare enrollment, and other factors affect this risk? To find out, Danish investigators analyzed national registry data on childcare enrollment and hospitalizations for ARIs in children aged 0 to 5 years (>135,000 hospital admissions and almost 4 million person-years of follow-up). Upper respiratory infections accounted for 63% of hospitalizations for ARIs.
Children younger than 12 months who had been enrolled in childcare facilities for fewer than 6 months had a 69% higher incidence of hospitalization for ARIs than children of the same age who were cared for at home.…
