On average, U.S. youth listen to music 1.5 to 2.5 hours per day. Sexual themes are common in much of this music and might contribute to earlier sexual initiation. To determine the effect of degrading sexual music content, investigators prospectively interviewed 1461 adolescents at baseline and again 1 and 3 years later about their sexual behavior, media use, and other factors linked to sexual initiation.
Youths who reported listening to a lot of music with degrading sexual content at the second interview were more likely, compared with those who reported never or sometimes listening, to initiate intercourse and to progress to more advanced levels of noncoital sexual activity by the third interview.
