The new guidelines from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommend universal vaccination with the quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in girls ages 11 to 12 years and catch-up immunization in females ages 13 to 26 years. The current vaccine is highly effective in preventing infection with HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18. FDA approval for an HPV 16 and 18 vaccine is expected within the next year. To examine the likelihood of parental acceptance of HPV vaccination for young adolescent girls, investigators conducted a statewide, random-digit-dial, telephone survey of 522 California parents of daughters age 18 years or younger who lived at home.
