Kawasaki syndrome (KS) is associated with the development of coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs) in as many as 25% of untreated patients. When patients are treated with intravenous immunoglobulin within 10 days of fever onset, however, the rate of CAA decreases to about 5%. To examine factors associated with CAA, investigators performed a retrospective, case-control chart review of 21 KS patients (mean age, 11.5 years) with aneurysms and 81 KS patients without aneurysms matched for date of fever onset who were treated at two San Diego hospitals during an 11-year period.
