Longitudinal studies have demonstrated that thin-body preoccupation and social pressure to be thin (TBPSP) in adolescent girls predicts the onset of bulimia and binge-eating disorder. To identify risk factors for the development of TBPSP at age 11, investigators at Stanford University followed 216 full-term, healthy newborns and their parents for 11 years.
Infant and child feeding behaviors, parent eating behaviors, and other parent characteristics were assessed through observation, interview, and questionnaires. Two groups at risk for TBPSP were identified in the 134 children (66 boys and 68 girls) available for assessment at age 11.
