Asking two questions — one about mood (Over the past 2 weeks, have you felt down, depressed or hopeless?) and the other about anhedonia (Over the past 2 weeks, have you felt little interest or pleasure in doing things?) — has been shown to be as effective as longer screening measures for identifying maternal depression in the primary care setting. Further, this two-item screen was shown to be significantly more effective when administered on paper than by interview (Journal Watch Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine Aug 29 2005). Researchers in Maryland tested the validity and stability of the two-item screen at a university-affiliated, pediatric, resident, continuity clinic that serves low-income urban families.
