In May 2004, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians jointly issued a new clinical practice guideline for the diagnosis and management of acute otitis media (AOM). To compare physicians’ practice with the guideline’s recommendations, investigators surveyed pediatricians and family medicine physicians from a national practice-based primary care pediatric research network in October 2004 and March 2006.
Completed 2006 surveys were received from 299 physicians (77% pediatricians). The guideline’s “observation option” for certain low-risk children was considered to be acceptable by 88% of respondents in 2004 and by 83% in 2006, but respondents in 2006 reported using this option for only a median of 15% of…
