In 1999, results from the randomized, controlled Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD (MTA) showed significant benefits after 14 months from medication alone and medication plus behavior management compared with behavior management alone or community treatment in 579 children aged 7 to 9 years. The two medication groups had significantly greater improvement in ADHD and oppositional symptoms. In addition, the medication-plus-behavior-management group had improvements in coexisting anxiety, disruptive behavior, and parent and teacher satisfaction ratings. Ten months after the 14-month treatment phase ended, 24-month follow-up revealed persistent benefits in the two medication groups, although the effect sizes were reduced to half …
