Treatment of childhood cancer is a dramatic success story, with more than 80% of children diagnosed before age 20 surviving for 5 years or more. Using data from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, researchers compared the incidence of parent-reported social and behavioral problems in 2979 cancer survivors (≥5-year survival; age range, 12–17) and in 649 randomly selected nearest-age siblings. Parents completed a subset of questions from the Child Behavior Checklist. Survivors were classified as having difficulties in a given social or behavioral domain if their scores were 1.3 standard deviations or more above the mean score for the sibling group.
