Enteroviral infection in the pediatric population most commonly manifests as a minor viral infection with or without rash; herpangina; or hand, foot, and mouth disease. Less common but more severe manifestations include myocarditis, aseptic meningitis, and encephalitis. Recently, outbreaks of enterovirus serotype 71 (EV71) have caused substantial morbidity and mortality in Asia. Now, researchers describe an EV71 outbreak in Denver involving 16 patients from 2003 through 2005.
